Key Requirements (Updated for 2025)

To apply successfully, you must meet the following core criteria:

Genuine Relationship

You must demonstrate that your relationship is genuine and continuing, supported by strong evidence such as marriage or birth certificates, communication records, photos, or cohabitation documents.

English Language

Most adult applicants must pass an approved English language test at CEFR Level A1 or higher, unless exempt.

Financial Requirement

As of April 2024, your UK-based sponsor must earn at least £29,000 annually to support your application. Alternatively, the requirement can be met through savings of £88,500, held for at least six months.

Note: Further increases to this threshold are expected in 2025.

Accommodation

You must show that there is suitable accommodation in the UK for you and your dependents without requiring public funds.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa: £3,250

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year. Most applicants pay £2,587.50 for a 2.5-year visa
Fiancé(e) visa route: Exempt from the IHS

Most family visas are valid for 2 years and 9 months
You can extend your visa before expiry

After 5 years of continuous residence, you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
ILR holders may apply for British citizenship after 12 months
